We don’t believe dog training is simply about teaching a dog to sit, stay or walk nicely on a lead. True training is about understanding canine behaviour, communication, motivation and learning — and knowing how to apply that knowledge consistently.
MEET KARL DONALDSON
FOUNDER & LEAD TRAINER
Karl Donaldson is the founder of GPK9 and a Close Protection and K9 handler with a background in professional working-dog environments.
His experience has developed through practical dog handling and training, where communication, control, awareness and reliability are essential.
Working with dogs has given Karl a strong understanding of the importance of the handler’s role in training.
A dog can learn commands, but the quality of the relationship between the dog and handler ultimately determines how reliably those behaviours can be applied.
That’s why GPK9 takes a different approach.
We don’t just train dogs. We educate handlers.
WHY GPK9?
GPK9 was created from the belief that dog owners deserve to understand why their dog behaves the way it does — not simply being told what command to use.
A dog pulling on the lead, struggling with recall, reacting to other dogs or becoming over-excited isn’t necessarily being “naughty”.
Behaviour can be influenced by motivation, environment, stress, arousal, previous learning and the way the handler communicates.
Understanding those factors allows us to approach training more effectively.
FROM FAMILY DOGS TO WORKING K9s
GPK9 provides education for a range of dogs and handlers, from puppies beginning their training journey through to advanced obedience and working-dog development.
Our foundation programmes help establish engagement, confidence, socialisation and basic obedience.
As dogs mature, training can progress towards impulse control, advanced obedience, environmental distractions and reliable off-leash work.
For appropriate dogs and handlers, GPK9 also provides education surrounding advanced working-dog and protection-dog principles.
Protection training is about far more than teaching a dog to bite.
A professionally trained protection dog requires obedience, control, stability, discrimination, environmental awareness and a capable handler.
At GPK9, control always comes first.
GPK9 UNIVERSITY
For handlers who want to develop their knowledge further, GPK9 University provides a structured pathway covering canine behaviour, training methodology and advanced handling.
The GPK9 University Master Program combines practical training with an extensive educational curriculum covering subjects including canine communication, stress and reactivity, trigger stacking, resource guarding, redirected behaviour, scent work and advanced handling principles.
The objective is to develop more than someone who can teach a dog commands.
It’s about developing a handler who understands what is happening, why it is happening and how to influence behaviour effectively.
